Day trip to Julian

Julian, California is about a 2.5 hour drive from our house. Last year we went apple picking there and had so much fun we decided to do it again this year. We asked our son, Evan, and his girlfriend, Lauren, to join us.  I did a little more research this time and found out there are wineries in the area and picnic sites, so we packed a picnic lunch and spent the whole day there. One thing I didn't do this year  was to call ahead, so when we arrived in town we found out it was the last day to pick apples. A lot of the crop had been damaged by frost in May and so the crop was very small this year. Small as in amount of apples produced not the size of the apples. But you would never know that by this tiny apple pictured here.

It seems the apple in the mouth will be Mr. R's traditional photo, so Evan did it too. The weather was warm (a little too warm for me) but it was really clear and a beautiful day. After picking apples and pears, we went to Menghini Winery where we enjoyed our picnic lunch, using my "Awesome Picnic Quilt" as a tablecloth. We tasted wine at three different wineries and enjoyed talking with the owners of each one.
Now I will need to make some applesauce and apple pie filling and do some canning. We didn't pick a huge amount of apples, but a little too many to just keep around for fresh eating.
It was a nice relaxing day, but a little far for a day trip. So next year, we decided we will stay in one of the local B&B's, and make it a weekend getaway.

Thanks for stopping by,

Ooh, that looks like a lovely day, and great idea to turn it into a weekend thing next year (you can fit in more vineyards then too ;o) )

What a brilliant day trip, but yes, B&B and more wineries are definitely in order!

Looks like a great family day! If Paul didn't hate apples I would try a day trip next year.
