I don't know about you but I save my selvages. I have been saving them for years and have only made one project with them.
After finishing the piecing of my DS Clamshell quilt, I decided to make a DS selvage quilt.
I started working on it today.
I made one block using both the edge with the name of the fabric and the plain selvage edge.
One block quickly turned into 9 blocks
and then 16 blocks
After finishing the piecing of my DS Clamshell quilt, I decided to make a DS selvage quilt.
I started working on it today.
I made one block using both the edge with the name of the fabric and the plain selvage edge.
One block quickly turned into 9 blocks
and then 16 blocks
and finally 25 blocks. All in one day's sewing.
I decided I really like making these blocks, so it will not be dedicated to only using my Denyse Schmidt selvages. I'm shooting for 100 blocks. Mine are 8.5" unfinished.
It seems everyone likes these blocks and we all have selvages that we think we are saving for some great project so lets join together and make selvage blocks. My IG friend, Marcia @imwithcharlie, suggested I start an IG Block-Along, so I did. I have also started a Flickr group, so please join in. Use the hashtag #selvageblockalong when you post photos on Instagram.
And if you don't want to make a quilt, check out all these projects on Pinterest for using selvages.
Here are some tutorials for making selvage blocks
I started with a piece of Vellum paper, cut it to 8.5" square. I drew a diagonal line from corner to corner and started by sewing two selvage strips right sides together, as if paper piecing, along that diagonal line. Then I added strips, under each edge of the selvage, and topstitched each row.
Tomorrow I will take some photos and show you how I sew mine.

Very fun! I gave away all the selvages I'd saved a few months back - kinda wishing I hadn't now!
if you need any let me know! I don't save them personally but I have a bunch in all different sizes!
I don't save selvages. Now I wish I had. Very cute string quilt blocks.
I don't save my selvages either, I like to leave at least parts of them on the fabrics for later identification. Your blocks look wonderful and I shall be watching the block along.
I have lots of selvages (usually dont't save the printed side, will start to now) but not sure I have time right now. Starting this week 5 trips in the next 6 weeks won't be much sewing going on except in airplanes. This is so cute!!!
I love these - can see how they would be completely addictive! And yes, of course I have a bag of selvedges that I've been saving for "some day" :-)
I have selvedges I'm saving for something, I just haven't figured out what yet. I don't think it's blocks though...
You have more DS selvedges than I have had DS fabric!!!
These are awesome. I have a big basket of selvedges and this is definitely on my project list soon.
You're on fire! They're looking lovely. I save mine too, but really am not at all interested in using them. I usually send them over to Emily who's saving up for her selvage dress.
These look great, I used to keep my selvedges but never used them so stopped hoarding them. But I still have the original box, must do something with them.
You have inspired me to start saving mine. These blocks are rad. :)
