Secret Sister

One of the most fun things of the Sew South weekend is Secret Sister. We get to be spoiled all weekend with little surprise gifts and treats by another sewing enthusiast.
I already shared about my surprises from my secret sister in my Sew South re-cap.

When partner assignments were handed out and I saw that my partner was Valerie, I was so happy. I have met Val on a few occasions and she seriously has the biggest heart of anyone I know;  I was over-joyed to get to pamper her with gifts and treats.
I started by leaving a bag of sewing supplies and candy at the front desk, so when she checked into the hotel she would get her first gift.
I continued to leave little gifts on her sewing station throughout the weekend with the help of several "partners in crime". Candy, sticky notes, coffee mug, mini journal, cute clothespins and a magazine were some of the things I gifted to Val.

I also made her a cute little coin purse, but of course forgot to take a photo of it. I borrowed this photo from Val's Instagram feed.

On the final evening of Sew South, we reveal ourselves to our secret sister. Val and I were both crying and hugging and it was all captured on camera...the ugly cry.

For the final gift I made a pillow using Denyse Schmidt fabrics and Essex Yarn Dyed Linen in Flax. I used the fantastic acrylic template I received as part of a class at the Sewing Summit in 2012. It's really too bad Tabslot went out of business. They made really good templates. This one is a one piece template that cuts both the concave and convex sides of the drunkard's path block.

I decided to make it two-sided, quilting it with straight lines on this side.

The "front side" is quilted with a continuous circle, with gradually increasing distance between each circle.

Adding a red exposed zipper on the bottom made it easy to slip a pillow form into the cover after I arrived in Charlotte. My friend Cindy drove me to Joann's in Charlotte, not once, but twice to get the pillow form. The first time I forgot to buy it because I got busy looking at other things; the second time I bought a 16" form and needed an 18" form. I gave Val the receipt and she was able to exchange it for the correct size after she got home.

Secret Sister is so fun that now we are doing a Post Sew South Swap. I wonder who my partner will be this time.
