Not Squared

Not Squared is my latest quilt finish. I really like the way it turned out. To say that I have a little love affair with Denyse Schmidt fabrics is an understatement. This is the sixth quilt that I have made using primarily all Denyse fabrics and all but one still live with me!

For this quilt I worked with scraps from all the other quilts I have made using DS fabrics, plus solid scraps and up cycled denim fabrics. Each block is pieced using improv techniques, mostly ripping the fabric or cutting with scissors. I did not use a rotary cutter, except to square up each block to 16.5".
I really had fun making each block with no plan as to color or strip size. My only plan was to make each block a 1/4 Log Cabin block, use solids, DS fabrics, a strip of denim in each block and to have each block end with a dark blue solid.
After making a few of these blocks I really got going and ended up making 20-16.5" blocks. I thought the finished quilt would look good in our guest bedroom as a bedspread on the twin trundle bed, where some of our grandchildren sleep when they visit. Twenty blocks was not big enough, so I added a 10" border of dark navy solid all around the pieced top.
Quilted with randomly spaced, organic lines approximately 1" apart gives the quilt enough texture, but still keeps it simple enough to be used as a bed covering.
I bound the quilt with the same fabric as the border to keep a look of continuity and to keep the focus on the blocks.
I decided to submit this quilt for consideration as a QuiltCon contender; it is steeped in tradition yet uses modern fabrics and straight line quilting.
